Introduction
After years of teaching and preaching to thousands of Christians, I came to a startling conclusion:
I had embraced a distorted view of God—one profoundly influenced by our cultural biases. I (and all
of the Christians with whom I was associating) believed we had a clear picture of the God Who has been
revealed in the Bible; however, we unknowingly had looked at God through the Western worldview, which
has its roots in Greek and Roman thought. Since then, I have discovered that most North American and
European Christians hold tightly to a distorted view, and this is robbing them from knowing God more
deeply and living as His children. You, too, may have some misconceptions about God which have been
established by the cultural influences around you. Perhaps you have considered this. Maybe you have had
reason to meditate on the question, “Who is God?” Perhaps, as I have, you have faced situations in life
which have left you wondering about God’s involvement in your daily affairs. Or perhaps you have come
across Bible passages which talk about God’s dealings with humanity, and they have left you wondering—even
troubled. I was troubled enough to start over. Convinced that the God of the Bible is the true God, I
decided to rebuild. I started in the Book of Genesis and built one truth upon another. In a short time, I
was seeing God as I never had seen Him before. I was seeing Him in a way that contradicted the image I had
been taught in church, at home, and through most Christian books. I want to show you what I discovered.
It will be worth your effort to reconsider your own under-standing. I want to show you how your concept of
God is at the foundation of everything you believe. I will explain how it determines what you think about
yourself. Then I will show you how the implications reach into every home, every church, every prayer, and
into every decision you make. Before we proceed, let me assure you that I believe the Bible to be the
inspired Word of God and I believe in the Trinity. I understand that there are three Persons in one God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I also understand that God has and continues to reveal Himself through the
Old and New Testaments. He reveals Himself through Creation, throughout history, and to individuals in
various ways and at different times. The clearest revelation we have of God is in Jesus Christ. He is the
exact representation of the Father.
